A certification only means something if you can look it up. Both of ours are administered by third-party bodies that maintain public directories of certified facilities and re-audit those facilities annually.
R2v3 Responsible Recycling
Administered by SERI (Sustainable Electronics Recycling International)
What it covers: How electronic material is received, tested, repaired, tracked, and sent downstream — including the requirement that nothing we handle is landfilled or passed to a non-conforming processor.
Why it matters: When a Phoenix procurement or sustainability team asks a vendor for certified electronics recycling, R2v3 is the standard they mean. It is re-audited every year by an independent certification body, not self-declared.

What it covers: How data-bearing media is collected, transported, destroyed, and documented — including background-screened personnel, controlled access, and unannounced audits of the destruction process.
Why it matters: NAID AAA is the credential standing behind your certificate of data destruction. It is what lets an auditor treat that certificate as evidence rather than a delivery receipt.

Every business engagement involving data-bearing media ends with a serialized certificate, issued under our NAID AAA controls and delivered with the chain-of-custody record and the zero-landfill recycling report for the same load. It is normally in your hands within two business days of processing at our Phoenix facility on Rose Garden Lane.
- Every drive, SSD, and tape listed individually by serial number, with make and model
- The NIST SP 800-88 method applied to each asset — purge (verified overwrite or crypto-erase) or destroy (shredding)
- The date of destruction, the facility where it happened, and the technician who performed it
- A chain-of-custody reference tying the certificate back to the signed transfer record from your pickup
- Signature of the authorized EWaste Phoenix representative issuing the certificate
If your policy requires witnessed destruction, we schedule a window at your Phoenix-area facility so your security or compliance lead can watch the drives go into the shredder; otherwise media moves under sealed, GPS-tracked transport to our plant. Either way the serial-level record is the same.
Standards We Work To, and Claims We Do Not Make
Media sanitization follows NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1, which defines the clear, purge, and destroy methods referenced on your certificate. NIST publishes that standard; it does not certify recyclers against it, so we describe 800-88 as a standard we follow rather than a credential we hold. The audited credential covering how we apply it is NAID AAA.
We also do not claim to be “EPA certified” — the EPA runs no such program for electronics recyclers — and we do not display ISO badges we cannot back with a certificate number and a scope statement. If a claim is not verifiable in a public registry or in a document we can hand you, it is not on this page.
Current R2v3 and NAID AAA certificate numbers, our certification scope, our insurance certificates, and the names of the audited downstream processors that receive our material are supplied in writing with any Phoenix or Maricopa County business account, and during vendor review on request. Nothing we collect is landfilled.

What does R2v3 certified mean for businesses?
R2v3 certified means the recycler passes independent annual audits against SERI's R2 Version 3 standard, which governs data sanitization, downstream vendor vetting, worker safety, and tracking of focus materials so equipment isn't dumped or illegally exported. For a business, that translates to documented chain of custody, verifiable end-of-life reporting for ESG and audits, and reduced liability when IT assets leave your building.
What is a certificate of data destruction, and who asks to see one?
It is the document that proves specific data-bearing assets were destroyed, by whom, when, and by which method. Ours lists each hard drive, SSD, and tape by serial number, names the NIST 800-88 method used, and is issued under our NAID AAA controls alongside your chain-of-custody record. HIPAA, GLBA, SOX, PCI-DSS, and CMMC auditors all ask for exactly this document, and it is normally in your hands within two business days of processing at our Phoenix facility.
What certifications should an ITAD vendor have?
Look for R2v3 for responsible reuse and recycling and NAID AAA for certified data destruction — together they cover both the equipment and the data on it. Ask for current certificates, confirm the certified scope covers the exact services and facility handling your assets, and verify the vendor's downstream vendors are certified too. Uncertified brokers cannot document where your equipment or data ended up.
Is R2v3 certification required for e-waste vendors?
No law requires R2v3 — it is a voluntary standard, not a federal or Arizona licensing mandate. In practice, though, most enterprise, healthcare, financial and government contracts require vendors to hold R2v3 or an equivalent certification, because it is the only practical way to verify downstream accountability, data sanitization controls and audited recycling of every asset. We are R2v3 and NAID AAA certified for business clients across the Phoenix metro.
How can I verify that EWaste Phoenix is really R2v3 and NAID AAA certified?
Both programs publish searchable directories of certified facilities, so you never have to take a vendor's word for it. SERI lists R2v3 certified facilities and i-SIGMA lists NAID AAA certified companies — both are linked on this page. Our current certificate numbers, our audited scope, and the names of our downstream processing partners are supplied in writing with any Phoenix or Maricopa County business account, and on request during vendor review.
Is NIST 800-88 a certification?
No, and we do not present it as one. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 is a published media sanitization standard that defines the clear, purge, and destroy methods; NIST does not certify recyclers or issue credentials against it. We work to that standard, and the certification that is independently audited over how we apply it is NAID AAA. For the same reason we do not claim to be 'EPA certified' — the EPA does not run a certification program for electronics recyclers.
Do you issue certificates of data destruction to Phoenix households?
No. EWaste Phoenix is a business-only recycler. We serve offices, facilities, warehouses, labs, and data centers across Phoenix and Maricopa County, and certificates are issued to business accounts only. We do not offer residential or in-home pickup.
